When you are looking to add new employees to your inbound marketing agency you had better have a system in place. Haphazardly bringing new people on board will result in mistakes for your clients, unhappy employees and way more stress for you.
It’s quite a balancing act. Too much oversight and people will feel micro managed and unhappy. Too little oversight and you run the risk of work not getting done or even worse, being done poorly. A little planning and strategizing can ease this process and help you walk the precarious new employee tight rope to success.
Here are 5 smart strategies to help you ramp up new inbound marketing employees.
Do your homework up front. Starting off by hiring the right people makes all the difference in the world. What is their background? Have they worked in marketing before or are they just telling you they’re awesome at posting to Instagram?
Have they been reliable at past jobs? What were their responsibilities? Ask them how they improved things at their previous jobs or what ideas they presented for improvement.
What kind of initiative have they shown in the past? How did they work with groups? How did they work alone? Which did they prefer?
These are all questions that give you insight into what kind of employee they will be. And if you start off with the right people, the ramping up is all that much easier.
Take advantage of free training. Did you know Hubspot offers free Inbound Training? Check it out right here.
Hubspot offers a full inbound marketing training course with about 7 hours of training videos. The videos make up 12 classes that can be taken on demand so you can be super flexible with your new employees and they can learn at their pace at any time.
By completing the training course your new employee will learn all they need to know about inbound marketing. Hubspot’s videos walk through the basics and then through each of the four stages, attract, convert, close, delight in deep detail.
Quite frankly, this course is an invaluable tool and it’s FREE. Talk about value! We at Peak Inbound Marketing require that every new employee take the entire course before they start work with our agency.
Take advantage of free testing. The training course is just the beginning of the free tools that Hubspot offers. They also have a timed online test that will verify that your new employee actually retained all that inbound marketing training.
For people who complete the test Hubspot grants an official Inbound Certification.
In order for your employees to to earn their official Inbound Certification badge and certificate, they must receive a score 75% or greater on their test.
They will get 75 minutes to answer 60 questions. Questions are multiple choice and true/false. They have three chances to pass the test. If they do not pass, they will have to wait 48 hours before taking the test again. If they do not pass three times in a row, they will be locked out from taking the test for 30 days.
Sounds a bit scary, but if you’ve really paid attention to the videos you should be able to pass the test.
Again, at Peak Inbound Marketing, we require that all new employees do the Hubspot Inbound Marketing training Course and pass the Inbound Certification test. It’s a great way to get your employees trained in inbound marketing and it’s FREE! Don’t miss a chance to take advantage of this great resource!
Start them off slowly. We like to start new employees off with some responsibility but also with some oversight.
Since we work for our clients and it’s our mission to delight them, we must make sure that the work done for them is up to snuff.
With new employees we get them started on simple tasks but ones that also allow for them to stretch their wings a bit, with supervision.
We start them out posting and scheduling blog posts for clients. The posts have already been proofed and are ready to go. Since scheduling them is a bit mechanical, we let them create the images for each post.
We use Canva for our blog post image creation. That makes it easy for us to make sure we get decent professional images regardless of who makes them. But it also gives us the chance to let the new employees stretch their creative muscles a bit.
Of course we approve all the images before they go live. If there’s problem with an image, tell the new employee what the problem is and how they can improve it. Then let them make the changes and come back with the second effort.
Treating this as a learning/teaching experience helps build the new employee’s work self esteem. Plus, we’ve found that most times they’ll pleasantly surprise you with their effort and the result.
Create systems that are easily replicated. My agency is just celebrating its first year anniversary this month and we’ve been growing recently. In fact we just added our first employee a few weeks ago.
I recently read/listened to a book called the E-Myth. The E-Myth’s premise is that in order for you to grow your small business you need to think about it like a franchise like McDonalds. Not meaning that you need to sell low quality services, but that you need to put systems in place for your business.
These systems need to be simple and repeatable. When you have them in place it makes it easier for you to grow the business because you’re able to have others do most of the actual work.
The systems are not so you can check out of the business, but so that you can grow it and deliver the same high quality work and results for your clients.
So there you have it 5 smart strategies for ramping up new inbound marketing employees. These are the exact strategies that we use here at Peak Inbound Marketing. I hope they are helpful to you. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions at [email protected].
